Blue Express logistics Inc. will close its Toronto, Ontario-based stores, which it has operated since the 1980s, after about six years of operating in Canada, the company said.
The company, which was founded in 1987, has more than 40 stores in the U.S., according to the Toronto Star.
Blue Express operates in nine states and has stores in all 50 U.s. states.
Blue Express, based in the Ontario town of Mississauga, Ontario, said the closing of the Canadian stores would be effective March 31, 2019.
A statement from the company read in part: The decision to close the Toronto, Ont., and the surrounding area stores is the result of difficult economic times and difficult business decisions.
We are currently preparing for the impact of this change and are looking forward to opening the Canadian operations in 2019.
The company is also working closely with local government and the private sector to ensure we have the right business environment to continue to serve the community and customers.
The impact on the communities of Ontario, Canada, and the U.,S.
will be felt for years to come.
Last year, Blue Express announced it was moving operations from its Toronto facilities to a new facility in the suburban Toronto suburb of Brampton.
In 2014, Blue said it planned to build and operate six stores in Brampton, two in Toronto, two more in Hamilton, Ontario and one in Waterloo, Ontario.
Blue Express said in a statement that the closure of the Toronto-based locations would be a significant financial loss for the company.
Blue says it has more stores in Ontario, U.K., and Germany than any other Canadian company, and that more than 2.3 million Canadians use its services, as well as a variety of other businesses.
